“Inspired by the Classic Showa Glass Style – The Predecessor of Taiwanese Stir-fry Glasses”

During Japan’s Showa era, the emergence of kissaten (traditional coffee shops) emerged as a cultural phenomenon. These establishments combined the roles of a café, bar, and social hub, where patrons enjoyed coffee, liquor, or tea in a cozy setting reminiscent of today’s cafés and bars.

This glass style gained immense popularity during the Showa period, especially as a small beer glass frequently used in kissaten. It was introduced to Taiwan during the 1940s under Japanese colonial rule through the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau. Over the years, the design evolved into what is now widely recognized as the “Taiwanese stir-fry glass.”
